Convert Markdown to EPUB
A Markdown file already carries its text, so upub never sends it through OCR. The work is structural: turning headings into real headings and building a table of contents your e-reader can navigate.
Measured, not claimed
This exact sample, end to end.
We ran a 26,471-word Markdown of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Project Gutenberg (Millennium Fulcrum Edition 3.0)) through upub and measured what came out.
The Markdown used here was written out from the HTML edition of the same book — a genuine Markdown file, converted like any other.

Source text: Project Gutenberg (public domain). www.gutenberg.org/files/11/11-h/11-h.htm
Inside the file you download
Not a text dump. A book your reader knows what to do with.
17 navigable entries in the table of contents
The file carries both an EPUB 3 nav.xhtml and a legacy toc.ncx, so the chapter menu works on new and old readers alike — not one long scroll of text.
17 headings kept as headings
Chapter and section titles come out as real h1–h6 elements, not as bold paragraphs. That is what lets a reader jump between sections and what screen readers announce.
Passes EPUBCheck with zero errors
Validated with the W3C reference validator. It is the same check Kobo, Apple Books and Google Play Books run when they ingest a file — a file that fails it can be rejected or render unpredictably.

About Markdown conversion
- Does the table of contents survive?
- Yes. Headings in the source become real EPUB 3 headings, and upub builds both a nav.xhtml and a legacy toc.ncx from them — the sample on this page came out with 17 navigable entries.
- Is this faster than converting a scan?
- Much faster. A scanned page has to be read by an AI model; a Markdown file does not. The conversion measured on this page finished in 0 seconds.
- Will the file work on my e-reader?
- The output is EPUB 3 validated with EPUBCheck, the same validator Kobo, Apple Books and Google Play Books run. For Kindle and Kobo specifics, pick your device from the profile list below.
